Founded in 2011, the Balneology Association of North America (BANA) is dedicated to educating the public, preserving geothermal mineral water sources, and recognizing their integrity and therapeutic value.
Get Your Waters Recognized as a Therapeutic Mineral Water Source
Join BANA’s Therapeutic Water Registry to document, protect, and elevate the value of your mineral or geothermal waters through credible classification, stewardship, and industry alignment.
Why participation is important
By participating in the registry, a hot springs property helps establish the true identity of its waters. It affirms that the spring is part of a cultural heritage of healing and a professional tradition of balneology that recognizes mineral water as a meaningful therapeutic medium. Registration is not just recognition. It is a commitment to stewardship, credibility, and the protection of these waters as distinct natural assets in North America.
What our programs offer
Our programs help hot springs operators strengthen how they position their waters and communicate their significance. Depending on the needs of the site, this may include:
support in understanding the role of mineral analysis and source-specific water data
educational language and interpretive content for guest inquiries, staff use, and public-facing materials
a clearer framework for describing a site’s waters within the context of balneology and therapeutic mineral water traditions
guidance on presenting the water as a distinct natural asset with integrity, history, and place-based value
connection to a broader initiative focused on research, education, best practices, and responsible stewardship
Why this matters now
As interest in hot springs grows, so do questions around regulation, hygiene, classification, access, and how mineral waters are represented to the public. BANA explicitly frames these issues as a reason to be proactive in protecting both the autonomy of these waters and the integrity of their therapeutic value.
A rigorous, source-specific approach helps operators speak about their waters with more confidence and consistency. It supports a professional standard that respects science, local identity, and the long history of therapeutic water use. It also creates a stronger foundation for public education without overreaching into unsupported claims.
A practical path forward
For hot springs operators, participation can begin with a straightforward process: reviewing available water analysis, identifying gaps, and building a stronger package of educational and interpretive materials around the source. BANA’s registry materials describe this as part of a broader effort to recognize and document therapeutic mineral waters while avoiding publication of site analyses or making specific therapeutic claims about individual waters.
In other words, this is about helping hot springs communicate responsibly and professionally while contributing to a larger effort to preserve the standing of natural mineral waters.
Who this is for
This work is especially relevant for:
Thermal mineral spring towns
Hot springs owners and operators
Water stewards
Medical and therapeutic practitioners
Regional tourism and economic development groups
Laboratories and research partners
Associations and international mineral water networks
Our shared aim
We believe natural mineral waters deserve to be understood, protected, and presented with care. With the right educational tools, research framing, and professional language, hot springs operators can better serve their guests while helping safeguard the future of these unique waters.
This is not only about recognition. It is about stewardship, credibility, and building a unified standard for the responsible future of therapeutic mineral water communities.
